Will EU actions deliver for cross-border philanthropy?

It seems that policy makers are hearing our sector’s concerns about the need to overcome barriers to cross-border philanthropy, both at the level of the European Commission and at the level of the European Parliament. There is an increasing acknowledgement of philanthropy and philanthropic organisations as key actors in moving several EU policy agendas forward for the public good and a willingness to reduce existing barriers. Philanthropy Advocacy is analysing ways forward – we will only know in a couple of weeks’ time if the new EU action will deliver for philanthropy – stay tuned!

European Parliament addresses abusive lawsuits against critical voices

On 10 November 2021, the European Parliament plenary adopted the joint JURI and LIBE Committee own initiative report on “Strengthening democracy, media freedom and pluralism in the EU”. Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) consist in abusive litigation characterized by a disparity of power and resources between the plaintiff and the defendant with the aim to shut down critical speech by intimidating critics and draining their resources.

Debate: “A Single market for Philanthropy” to unlock the potential of philanthropy ‒ private resources for public good ‒ across the EU

“Philanthropy can help us catalyse a more holistic response to the vast challenges that lie ahead, from climate change to vaccination and social innovation.” Those were the words of Mairead McGuinness, the European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and the Capital Markets Union, at the European Parliament plenary session of 21 October 2021. The plenary welcomed Commissioner McGuinness on behalf of Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel to start a debate on the proposal to build a “single market for philanthropy”.
